The Technology Services Committee (TSC) is a joint committee of VA AWWA and the Virginia Water Environment Association (VWEA). The TSC actively promotes the use and integration of information technology within the water and wastewater industries. The committee promotes technology exchange between VA AWWA and VWEA members and the IT industry by working with the members to identify the strategic technology needs of the organizations and providing resources to help with implementation.
The TSC has worked with the VA AWWA and VWEA organizations to implement technology, such as the barcode scanners, that are used to track session attendance at workshops and conferences (including the annual Water JAM) for developing transcripts and certificates for continuing education credits. TSC members coordinate and support the technology needs of other committees as well as the VA AWWA and VWEA organizations during events such as workshops and conferences.
The educational focus of the Technology Services Committee continues at each TSC meeting, where relevant topics surrounding information technology and the water/wastewater industries are presented and discussed with real-world experience. Topics discussed within the committee include Big Data, Cybersecurity, Smart Water Networks, Field Data Collection, SCADA, GIS, Asset Management, etc.
On January 18th, The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), published Incident Response Guide: Water and Wastewater Systems (WWS) Sector.
Developed in collaboration with over 25 WWS Sector industry, nonprofit, and state/local government partners, this guide aims to enhance WWS Sector cybersecurity by:
- Establishing clear guidance for reporting cyber incidents,
- Connecting utilities with available cybersecurity resources, services, and no-cost trainings,
- Empowering utilities to build a strong cybersecurity baseline to improve cyber resilience and cyber hygiene, and
- Encouraging utilities to integrate into their local cyber communities.
