EPA Region 3 Virtual Emergency Response Plan Workshop
Date: January 26, 2021

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and the Virginia Rural Water Association (VRWA) are hosting a free one-day virtual workshop to assist community (drinking) water systems (CWSs) with developing or updating Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) in accordance with America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 (AWIA) Section 2013(b).

AWIA Section 2013(b) requires CWSs serving more than 3,300 people to develop or update ERPs that incorporates the findings of their risk and resilience assessment. The law specifies the components that ERPs must address and establishes deadlines by which water systems must certify to EPA completion of the ERP.

This workshop will provide a broad overview of the requirements and the new EPA ERP Template and Instructions that will assist water utilities with developing an ERP in accordance with AWIA Section 2013(b).  The virtual workshop will also provide more detailed information on specific response areas such as cybersecurity among others.

Water Awareness and Outreach - Is that you?
Join us in sharing the essential work of our state’s utilities with the communities we serve!  The newly reformed Water Awareness and Outreach committee is looking for new members. If you are a public information, education, or outreach professional, this is the committee for you! We work on providing training, networking opportunities, and a statewide communications toolkit for drinking water week. We focus mainly on public information, education, and outreach professionals, but also want to cater to leaders who are still learning about the importance of communication and outreach as part of an organization.

Committee activities include:
  • Networking and educational events held in various locations throughout Virginia
  • Annual WaterJam Workshop and networking event
  • Annual Public Information Awards
  • Social Media management for VA AWWA
  • Creation of Statewide communication toolkits
  • Webinars related to public information, education, and outreach in the water world
The committee meets every second Wednesday of the month at 10 am. If you’re interested in learning more, you can contact the committee Chair, Lilly Meighan at lillian.meighan@lynchburgva.gov, or request to join the committee on the VA AWWA website.
