Welcome, Scott Smith!
 VA AWWA Training Coordinator
Please join us in welcoming Scott Smith to the Virginia Section AWWA in the role of Training Coordinator. Scott has held a variety of roles in customer care, training, and education. He most recently worked as Faculty Coordinator for the Art Institute of Houston and as a Professor of English at Lone Star College and Houston Community College in Texas. Mr. Smith holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in English from Bennington College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in English from the University of Lynchburg.

COVID-19/WARN Weekly Webinar

VA WARN will be holding weekly informational meetings via Zoom.  All water and wastewater systems are invited to attend.  (Membership in the WARN program is not required.)


Topic: Emergency Preparedness for all Water and Wastewater Systems in light of COVID-19

For the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Sustainable Utilities Committee wants to encourage all members to get involved!  Members and activities will be featured in an article published in the VWEA and VA AWWA magazines.

Fred Angel Exceptional Service Scholarship

One person will be awarded free hotel accommodations and free registration to the 2020 Virginia AWWA Customer Service Workshop!  Our 2020 Workshop theme---People, Purpose, and Passion: Pathways to Customer Success promises to be a dynamic, fun-filled and transformative learning experience.

There are 5 scholarships being offered this year.
One AWWA Operator’s Scholarship
Two awards of $1,000 being offered to Virginia operators for professional development.
Ray A. Jackson Undergraduate Scholarship
One award of $2,000 to help a student pursuing an undergraduate degree at a Virginia college.
VA AWWA Graduate Scholarship
Two awards of $2,500 will help graduate students pursuing a degree at a Virginia college.
Applications for the Operator’s Scholarships are due May 15, 2020 and Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Applications are due May 29, 2020.

Gain recognition for your safety efforts...Nominate your water facility today for the 2019 VA AWWA Larry Gordon Safety Award! Virginia is proud of last year’s winner, Spotsylvania County Utilities.  Could your utility win this year?  The nominations deadline is Friday, May 29, 2020.

This award will be presented to a Virginia waterworks facility that promotes an active and effective safety program.

New Year, New Leadership Academy
The VA AWWA/VWEA Leadership Academy is a year-long professional development class focusing on emotional intelligence, ethics, and interpersonal skills. The program kicks off with the first session at WaterJAM 2020 and then consists of four one hour phone meetings and four all-day in-person workshops. Program participants are required to join and become active members in a VA AWWA/VWEA committee of their choosing. Topics of discussion include self-awareness, stress management, decision making, communication, and motivation. More details on the 2020-2021 Leadership Academy are available here.
42nd Annual Customer Service Workshop
The VA AWWA Customer Service Committee is proud to announce the 42nd Annual Customer Service Workshop to be held on October 21st-23rd in Virginia Beach, VA at the Holiday Inn and Suites – North Beach. This year’s workshop focuses on People, Purpose, and Passion:  Pathways to Customer Success!
