Sustainable Utilities Committee Member Spotlight - Meet Evan Bowles
What does sustainability mean to you and how does it play a role in your work? Sustainability can mean so many things depending on the person you’re speaking to. To me, it means learning from the past while planning toward the most probable future. I serve as our firm’s sustainable design lead, which allows me to work on interesting projects all over the country. We help our utility clients identify ways to reduce resource consumption, minimize ecological impacts, and design resilient infrastructure. If we do our job correctly, we help to demonstrate the value of the utility’s services to their rate and taxpayers.

Women Impacting Water

Calling all women and women supporters who want to start WaterJAM feeling connected and empowered! Join us for the first annual Women Impacting Water networking breakfast on Tuesday morning, starting at 7:30 AM. We’ll feature an interactive trivia-themed activity allowing attendees to network with female members of the water industry.

This breakfast is about bringing the industry together to celebrate the impact and value of women in water. To secure your spot for this free event, select the Women Impacting Water Networking Breakfast when registering for WaterJAM – and make sure to spread the word with peers who may be interested in attending too!  If you are already registered but wish to sign up for this special breakfast, please contact Geneva Hudgins at geneva.hudgins@vaawwa.org

USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services Announcement
The Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) Source Water Protection Areas (SWPA) Sub-Committee will be meeting in the next few weeks to discuss updates to high-priority areas for source water protection.  The 2018 Farm Bill includes a provision for the protection of source water through targeting conservation practices and including funding for conservation programs.

Please find linked below a USDA NRCS Bulletin with more information and an April 2020 AWWA Journal article that discusses the need and benefit of such programs as well as providing examples of partnerships.

If you believe that your source water watersheds would benefit from these programs we encourage you to contact Tim Mitchell who is VA AWWA representative on the NRCS SWPA Sub-Committee as soon as possible.
