The City of Newport News is seeking a Master Welder -All Levels Waterworks Department
 
What would a typical day on the job be like-what type of work would I do?

 The Master Welder performs complex automotive and heavy equipment welding work as well as preventative maintenance inspections, mechanical repairs, and electrical diagnostics on automotive, construction, and heavy equipment in the Waterworks Department.
 
Day to day, you will design and fabricate metal components and structures to improve existing designs and structural reliability while operating a forklift and overhead crane as needed. This position also performs a variety of welding tasks on automotive and heavy equipment utilizing highly specialized and skilled processes. This includes ARC, metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), silver soldering, carbon ARC, lancing rods, and brazing.  
 
In addition to welding, you will be responsible for performing preventive maintenance on automotive, construction, and specialized equipment. You will analyze failures and make recommendations on how to prevent similar failures in the future.  You work on repairing and replacing hydraulic lines and air fittings, adjusting brakes, removing and replacing hydraulic cylinders, and working with various electrical systems. 
 
This position advises staff on specific metal repairs and methods and perform specialized welding at remote work sites, utilizing a portable welder. You will also assist the Automotive Technicians as required.
 
This position also document work orders, reads and interprets equipment manuals, factory diagrams, and other technical manuals and blueprints as well as sketching planning drawings as required.
 
Safety is our top priority for all employees, so this position will also require maintenance of welding equipment, and a clean and tidy work area, free of occupational hazards.  
 
How much money can I make?
The salary range for this position is $41k-$80k.  Salary ranges are competitive based on education, qualifications, certifications, and experience. In addition to salary, the City offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to meet all of our employee’s needs! There are two (2) levels of Welder distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee. 
 
Master Welder - Requires a high school diploma and 3-5 years of responsible welding experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Requires welding certification based on AWS D1.1, structural, and a ASE G1-Maintenance and Light repair certification within 6 months of employment.  
 
Welder - Requires a high school diploma and 1 – 2 years of responsible welding experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

his position will also require satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit must be obtained prior to employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test within 60 days of employment.
