RK&K has an immediate and exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer to join our team in Virginia Beach, VA, and help implement cutting-edge technology advancements in municipal and commercial utility systems. As an Electrical Engineer at RK&K you will support the evaluation, design, commissioning and troubleshooting of electrical and instrumentation and control systems for water and wastewater transmission/conveyance, storage and treatment, natural gas transmission, and related facilities.

Basic Responsibilities/Functions

  • Design, size, select and specify equipment and instrumentation used to power, monitor, and control utility engineering systems 
  • Conduct technical evaluations to support planning and design efforts related to instrumentation and control systems  
  • Prepare and review technical memoranda, reports, drawings, specifications, and miscellaneous contract documents  
  • Facilitate construction administration and engineering services (submittal review, contract document interpretation, requests for information, correspondence, change requests and change orders) 
  • Perform field engineering and inspection services including factory and site operational and acceptance testing and trouble shooting
  • Prepare documentation and support startup and commissioning of new facilities 
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate with clients, utility owners, and project teams including other design disciplines, such as architectural, civil, mechanical, plumbing, structural and electrical designer professionals  
  • Prepare detailed engineering cost estimates   

Required Technical and Functional Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related engineering field
  • One (1) to (4) four years of experience in electrical and instrumentation and control systems
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills   
  • Demonstrated proficiency in organization and presentation of documentation
  • A self-starter, versatile, and interested in working on a variety of projects 
  • Ability to work with others to solve complex electrical and instrumentation and control systems issues 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite including Word, Outlook, Project, Excel and PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and Revit. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Successful completion of FE/EIT
  • Familiarity with electrical codes and standards
  • Proficiency with PLC and OIT programming
  • Proficiency with SCADA systems 
  • Demonstrated experience with the sizing, design, specification, construction, and start-up of electrical power and instrumentation and control systems including power distribution, standby power, variable frequency drives, PLC systems, instrumentation, and SCADA
  • Knowledge pertaining to water/wastewater/natural gas utility systems
