This is a technical position. The incumbent primarily collects wastewater samples from commercial and industrial customers and delivers them to the laboratory for analysis.  Performs grease trap inspections and initial screenings of new commercial or industrial customers which requires frequent interactions with customers.  Also completes related forms and maintains the strong waste database.  Maintains sampling equipment including completing minor repairs of automatic samplers.

Salary: $35,625.00 – 48,103.00 Annually
 
Organization: The Environmental Technician reports to the Assistant Chief of Operations and Maintenance and supervises no staff.
 
Essential Functions:
· Performs sampling for industrial and commercial wastes. Maintains chain of custody and quality control with sample collections.
· Conducts inspections of grease traps and industries and ensures their compliance.
· Assist with processing code violations.
· Drives monitoring vehicle for collection and transportation of samples and inspection purposes.
· Responsible for storage, operation, and maintenance of sampling-related equipment.
· May be required to conduct basic laboratory testing.
· Assists with selection and purchasing of supplies, equipment, and services.
· Maintains sampling and inspection-related data (e.g. database,
   spreadsheets, etc.).
· Performs related work as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must have general knowledge of commercial, industrial, and water/wastewater utilities systems with skill in performing sampling operations. Effective oral and written communication skills. Must be computer literate and able to work independently.
 
Education, Experience, and Training: Associates degree required (chemistry classes/education preferred) with at least three (3) years of related work experience – OR – Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable.
 
Special Conditions:
· Criminal records check, including fingerprinting
· Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License
· Twelve-month probationary period
· Work beyond normal work schedule
· Must wear uniform, including safety equipment
