The Public Utilities Department has 5 divisions, including the Water Treatment Plant, Field Utilities, Billing, Pumps, and Engineering, and has more than 50 employees and approximately 16,000 accounts. The department is responsible for providing a sufficient quantity and the reliable delivery of safe potable water in addition to the conveyance of sanitary sewer service.

The candidate selected for this position will report to the Director of Public Utilities. The Deputy Director will be responsible for assisting the Director on all issues pertaining to the long-term planning of activities, policies, budget, capital improvement, organization, and management, including supporting department initiatives and assisting in the development of business plans. The Deputy Director will be a collaborator and mentor who participates in and leads various departmental performance committees designed to transcend traditional functional division barriers. The ideal Deputy Director must be well-versed in municipal utilities asset management (maintenance and operations) and project management in addition to trends within the industry.

This is a full-time exempt position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $103,875 - $116,854 annually; however, anexact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. 


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in civil engineering or related field and extensive (6 or more years) experience in public utility design, construction, maintenance, and repair, including considerable (3-5 years) supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.

Candidates registered as a Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia are preferred; however, this is not a requirement for consideration.
