Chesterfield County’s Utilities Department is seeking a Chemist to perform complex chemical analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures to meet wastewater treatment plant operational needs and Federal and State Regulations. Analyses include but are not limited to pH, E. coli, carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, total kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonia, nitrate/nitrite, and total phosphorus. Operates a variety of laboratory instruments such as pH and dissolved oxygen meters, spectrophotometer, digestion blocks, distillation unit, and analytical balances. Prepares reagents and standard solutions. Cleans laboratory glassware to avoid contamination and cleaning/minor maintenance of laboratory equipment. Records all laboratory data on bench sheets and reports analytical results in database. Maintains responsibility for the quality and accuracy of all analytical work, data, and test results. Occasional work during inclement weather or holidays may be required due to atypical circumstances. Perform other work as required.

This position is a part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience. Successful candidate will possess a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or related field required and at least three years of experience performing laboratory analysis, preferably at least one year analyzing wastewater; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Minimum of one year experience in a VELAP or TNI certified/accredited laboratory preferred. Extensive knowledge and principles of chemistry and microbiology applicable to wastewater laboratory duties. Troubleshooting skills related to environmental laboratory analysis preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word preferred. Current driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
