The VA AWWA Distribution Systems Committee announces the 34th Annual Water Distribution Seminar and Utility Rodeo to be held on October 7-9 in Norfolk, VA. This traditional "hands-on" seminar is designed to provide distribution system personnel with practical information on relevant subjects. The ever-popular Utility Rodeo provides various utility-related competitive events in which participants compete against fellow utility personnel in demos of skill, speed, and safety.

We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Regional Walk for Water event in support of Water for People. This event is a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community, exercise, and raise funds for a cause close to our hearts. There are several locations, so find the nearest one and join in!

For Central VA YP members looking to get more involved, or if you just want an excuse to hang out at Hardywood Brewery, please join us for our committee's yearly planning meeting! We will be coordinating our events for the year, including opportunities for members to plan one themselves. Further involvement with the YP committee is a great way to meet others in the industry, gain leadership roles, further your education, and give back through community service!

Join the Eastern YPs for our Annual Thankful November by collecting food in your offices for the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore!

Join us for the Ninth Annual Model Water Tower Competition in the Tidewater area. The challenge is to build a structurally efficient model water tower that holds water and can be filled and drained quickly, while also being aesthetically pleasing. Middle school students from public, private, or home schools can compete in teams of up to four students each.

Join the Southwest VA Young Professionals for a networking happy hour at Super Rad Arcade Bar! Connect with colleagues over appetizers and retro arcade games. The entrance fee is covered for members of VWEA and/or VA AWWA.

Understanding the Secure Communications Gap

OT networks generally lack the secure communication features we take for granted in business networks. The CISA Control Systems Working Group is aiming to lower the barrier to secure communications adoption and is conducting Voice of the Customer (VoC) research to understand the real hurdles that owners and operators are facing. This research will turn into guidance not just for operators, but also integrators, vendors, and protocol bodies to support secure communications.

Please note that this session will not be recorded or transcribed in order to encourage active conversation and participation.

Do you have technical information you want to share with the water industry? Virginia Section is always looking for engaging and informative presentations that will enhance the knowledge and skills of our event attendees.

VWEA and VA AWWA invite students and young professionals to apply for a scholarship to support attendance at the Annual AWWA/WEF Young Professional Summit, held in conjunction with the Utility Management Conference. This year's event is scheduled for February 9-11, 2025, in Dallas, Texas.

Two individuals will be selected to receive a scholarship to support travel and attendance at the summit. Interested YPs should complete the scholarship application by Sunday, December 1st, to be considered.

Consideration is given to:

• Leadership Participation in VA AWWA and/or VWEA
• Committee Engagement in VA AWWA and/or VWEA
• Future goals in the industry and the associations

During the YP Summit, participants will:

• Discuss emerging challenges and identify how these may impact their goals.

• Explore trending workforce issues and how those offer opportunities for growth.
• Learn from peers and current water leaders the value of their perspectives as young professionals.
• Engage with hands-on water and wastewater tools and approaches in a team-setting to expand practical knowledge and build lasting peer-to-peer support networks.

This five (5) day training course is offered in support of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Virginia Waterworks Regulations. It is designed to prepare participants to test, inspect, and provide in-line maintenance of reduced pressure zone and other backflow prevention devices. Training includes both classroom and hands-on instruction with actual devices.

Join the VWEA | VA AWWA Sustainable Utilities Committee for a webinar on the innovative program being implemented by Loudoun Water to convert retired quarry pits, previously operated by Luck Stone, into strategic water supply reservoirs. These quarries will serve as raw water storage facilities for the Trap Rock Water Treatment Plant. This initiative aims to ensure a reliable water supply for Loudoun Water’s customers during periods when the Potomac River experiences drought conditions and cannot fully meet water demands in the region. Loudoun Water will provide an overview of the challenges faced in initiating and implementing the program, the necessary permits involved, and the strategic benefits of this significant program.
