Advisory Committee
(Heroism, Historical, Retiree & Resolutions)
Objective:
To prepare resolutions and resolve questions of protocol as
necessary and to oversee the efforts of the Heroism, Historical
and Retiree Sub-Committees.
Membership:
The Chair of the committee is appointed by the Board of Trustees.
Other committee members are recommended by the Chair of the
committee and approved by the VA Section Chair.

Duties:
The following are duties assigned
to this committee:
a. At times the committee will have to prepare
resolutions pertaining to known items that will be on the agenda
of the annual meeting.
b. The committee Chair usually requests the VA
Section Chair to announce at the opening of the annual
meeting that proposed resolutions should be presented to the
committee as soon as possible. In certain cases, it is not possible
to write the resolutions until action is taken by the membership.
c. Resolutions can be presented to the membership
by the committee as its own work with a motion to adopt or can
be presented by request with or without recommended action.
d. At times it may be advisable to cooperate with
other committees when immediate action is necessary.
e. Resolutions should be drawn up in a neat, balanced
format and as brief as possible, consistent with clarity
and the intent, thus adding to the effectiveness.
f. Resolutions should prescribe to whom a copy
or copies should be sent and that a copy be spread upon the
minutes of the meeting. When passed, they should state the meeting
and date and should bear the signatures of the Chair of the
VA Section, the Secretary, and, on special occasions, others
as may be requested.
g. Oversee activities of the sub-committees.
h. Adhere to guidelines set forth in the general
policies for committees (Section IIIA of the Handbook).
Sub-committees
Heroism:
Objective:
To officially recognize an act of heroism performed by an employee
in the water utility industry.
Duties:
To seek out and identify employees of the water utility industry
in Virginia who are qualified to receive the heroism award.
Historical:
Objective:
To organize and preserve VA Section records, documents, and
photographs.
Duties:
The following are duties assigned
to this committee:
a. Maintain VA Section records from previous years
in an organized manner.
b. Create and maintain a file containing biographical
information and photographs of past VA Section officers and
other prominent VA Section members.
c. Maintain liaison with the editor of the Newsletter
in order to preserve appropriate documents and photographs.
Retiree:
Objective:
To insure the continued participation by retired members of
the VA Section AWWA by developing a network for communication
and organizing activities for retired members.
Duties:
The following are duties assigned
to this committee:
a. Consider and recommend formal policies for free
or reduced registration at the annual conference, seminars,
or workshops.
b. Monitor illness, disability, or shut-in status
of retirees and their immediate families. Provide hospital
or home visits and support as needed.
c. Assume necrology function for VA Section. Develop
a VA Section sympathy card and a flower/contribution policy
for deaths.
d. Provide for a specific retiree function at the
annual conference, such as a breakfast or luncheon, and have
the Section hold a cocktail reception every 3-4 years.
e. Prepare and distribute a retiree newsletter,
and/or prepare articles for VA Section Newsletter.
f. Organize special events for retirees and spouses
including such things as golf tournaments and water plant tours.
g. Obtain oral histories from retirees, and develop
proposal for merging with historical committee.
h. Obtain list of retirees and serve on Local Arrangements
Sub-committee.
i. Establish a retiree speakers group to visit
elementary and high schools, and to give historic and present
perspectives on public water supply issues.
j. Develop liaisons with retirees in other sections.
