The Virginia Section (VA AWWA) works to promote the contributions of members and Virginia organizations to the drinking water field. In addition to the VA AWWA Awards, individuals and organizations may be nominated for appropriate awards presented by the International Association (AWWA). A.P. Black Res!
earch (AWWA)
The A.P. Black Research Award was established in 1967! in honor of Dr. A.P. Black to recognize outstanding research contributions to water science and water supply rendered over an appreciable period of time. The award is presented as deserved, but not more than once each year. Nominations may be made by members or sections. Abel Wolman Award of Excellence (AWWA)
The Abel Wolman Award of Excellence recognizes those whose careers in the water industry exemplify vision, creativity, and excellent professional performance characteristic of Abel Wolman's long and productive career. The award is presented as deserved, but not more than once each year. American/Canadian/Mexican Water Landmarks (AWWA)
To recognize and preserve an American, Canadian, or Mexican Water Landmark at least 50 years old that has had a direct and significant relationship with water supply, treatment, distribution, or technological development. A proposed water landmark must be considered and approved by the AWWA section in which it is located. The Nominations Committee is responsible for assembling VA AWWA's nominations package, and interested parties are encouraged to the contact the Chair of the Committee.

Award of Merit (AWWA)
An award of achievement to those outside the water profession who have demonstrated outstanding service in support of the principles of AWWA in providing better water for people. One may be awarded annually, but at the discretion of the AWWA Award of Merit Committee, more than one may be awarded. A nomination for the award may be submitted by a section or the Executive Committee, to the Executive Director who will transmit it to the AWWA Award of Merit Committee for consideration. Nominations are due to AWWA by October 1. Best Student Paper
This award was established to recognize the best paper presented by a student at the Annual Meeting. Judging for this award is coordinated by the Student Activities Committee.

Certificates of Appreciation
These are given to recongize individuals for specific tasks performed for VA AWWA, such as making a keynote address, giving a special presentation, or serving in a special capacity for the Section. The issuance of these certificates is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees.

Courageous Service (AWWA)
To recognize individuals who may not exactly fi! t the requirements of the Heroism Award, but are deserving of some type! of recognition. These individuals may be credited with risking their own life by "staying at their post" in an effort to save their water supply. While these individuals may not have saved someone else, they certainly went "above and beyond" the call of duty.The Nominations Committee is responsible for assembling VA AWWA's nominations package, and interested parties are encouraged to the contact the Chair of the Committee.

Distinguished Public Service (AWWA)
The Distinguished Public Service Award, established in 1951 in honor of Harry E. Jordan, is presented in recognition of distinguished public service outside the line of duty by an AWWA member. Public service is considered to be exceptional, long-term voluntary service in a leadershi! p capacity in or with community-based activities such as church, fraternal, youth, or service-oriented organizations and/or exceptional volunteer service in federal, state, provincial, municipal, or other governmental entities. The award is presented as deserved, but not more than once each year. Diversity (AWWA)
The Diversity Award recognizes an individual or organization that has created, promoted, and maintained diversity within an organization by establishing an environment that recognizes, encourages, and effectively utilizes each individual's talents. Edward H. Ruehl Operator of the Year
This award was established to recognize outstanding licensed water works operators in the Commonwealt! h of Virginia. The VA AWWA Plant Operations Committee will select from a pool of nominations received from the section membership (either individual, Corporate or Utility) for recommendation to the Board, which approves the nominee.
