VA AWWA presents annual awards to individuals and organizations in recognition of outstanding achievements and service in the water supply field. The procedures for nominations and selection vary by award and are summarized below. For more information, contact the Nominations Committee Chair (see the Nominations Committee page for chair contact information).

The Best Student Paper Award was established to recognize the best paper presented by a student at the Annual Meeting. Judging for this award is coordinated by the Student Activities Committee.
Certificates of Appreciation are given to recongize individuals for specific tasks performed for VA AWWA, such as making a keynote address, giving a special presentation, or serving in a special capacity for the Section. The issuance of these certificates is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees.
The Edward H. Ruehl Operator of the Year Award was established to recognize outstanding licensed water works operators in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VA AWWA Plant Operations Committee will select from a pool of nominations received from the section membership (either individual, Corporate or Utility) for recommendation to the Board, which approves the nominee. Members are invited to submit nominations to the VA AWWA Section Administrator by April 1st of each year. Nomination Form. Past conferees.
The Employer Support Recognition Award was established to recognize those employers who actively support the development of their employees by encouraging participation in VA AWWA. Award Description. Nomination Form.
The Herbert W. Evans Distinguished Service Award is given in recognition of the demonstrated activity of a member of AWWA who has contributed outstanding participation, counsel, and progressiveness to the Section. The VA AWWA Board of Trustees selects the award recipient from among nominations received from the Section membership. Members are invited to submit nominations to the Section Administrator by June 1 of each year. Past conferees.
The Howard A. Johnson 50-Year Service Award is bestowed upon individuals who have completed 50 years of membership in VA AWWA. Past conferees.
The Membership Award is given (a) to recognize the interest and demonstrated activity of the member who has secured the greatest number of new members in AWWA during a one-year period and (b) to honor the memory of a deceased member of VA AWWA who made outstanding and distinguished contributions to the Section. Past conferees.
The Virginia Section Heroism Award is given in recognition of any one of the following: • An act of rescue on the part of an employee in the water utility profession where the employee places himself/herself at great personal risk; • Water utility personnel who help other utilities recover from disasters; or, • Water utility personnel who are called to active military duty during national emergencies. Nominations for this award are accepted throughout the year. More than one award may be given annually as appropriate.
