the contributions of members and Virginia organizations to the
drinking water field. In addition to the VA AWWA Awards, individuals
and organizations may be nominated for appropriate national awards
presented by AWWA. The procedures for nominations and selection

The
Abel Wolman Award of Excellence recognizes those whose
careers in the water industry exemplify vision, creativity,
and excellent professional performance characteristic of Abel
Wolman's long and productive career. Recipients from the Virginia
Section have included Warren J. Hunt (1996) and Robert C.
Hoehn (2002). The award is presented as deserved, but not
more than once each year. The Nominations

| The
A.P. Black Research Award was established in 1967 in
honor of Dr. A.P. Black to recognize outstanding research
contributions to water science and water supply rendered over
an appreciable period of time. The award is presented as deserved,
but not more than once each year. Nominations may be made

| The
Distinguished Public Service Award, established in
1951 in honor of Harry E. Jordan, is presented in recognition
of distinguished public service outside the line of duty by
an AWWA member. Public service is considered to be exceptional,
long-term voluntary service in a leadership capacity in or
with community-based activities such as church, fraternal,
youth, or service-oriented organizations and/or exceptional
volunteer service in federal, state, provincial, municipal,
or other governmental entities. The award is presented as
deserved, but not more than once each year. Nominations may
be made by members or sections. In Virginia, the Nominations

| The
Diversity Award recognizes an individual or organization
that has created, promoted, and maintained diversity within
an organization by establishing an environment that recognizes,
encourages, and effectively utilizes each individual's talents.
The award is presented as deserved, but not more than once
each year. Nominations may be made by members or sections.

| The
Exemplary Source Water Protection Award was established
to recognize North American organizations who have developed
and are implementing source water protection programs. Each
year, up to three awards may be presented at the section level
and up to three awards may be presented at the national level.
Organizations may self-nominate or be nominated by an AWWA
member, regulatory agency responsible for source water protection,
a local chapter of the National Rural Water Association, or
regional authorities. The deadline for section-level entries

The
George Warren Fuller Award is presented annually by
each AWWA section to a member for distinguished service in
the water supply field in commemoration of the sound engineering
skill, the brilliant diplomatic talent, and the constructive
leadership that characterized the life of George Warren Fuller.
Each year, the VA AWWA awardee is selected by the Fuller
Award Committee. Past

| The
Heroism Award shall constitute official recognition
of an act of heroism on the part of an employee in the water
utility profession wherein the rescuer in the process of aiding
some other person or persons, must have placed himself/herself
at great personal risk. Candidates for this award are considered
on the basis of a recommendation by the VA AWWA Heroism
Subcommittee with concurrence from the Section chair and
secretary. The AWWA Heroism Award Committee is responsible
for considering nominations from the various sections and
recognizing recipients of the award. For more information,

| The
Honorary Member Award is presented each year to individuals
whose knowledge and accomplishments in the field of water
supply entitle him/her to special recognition. Nominations
must be received by AWWA by October 1 and may be submitted
by members or sections. In Virginia, the Nominations
Committee is responsible for making nominations on behalf
of the Section, and interested parties are encouraged to contact
the Nominations
Committee Chair. Past

The
Life Member Award is presented to those who have maintained
AWWA membership for 30 years. |
| The
Operator's Meritorious Service Award recognizes water
supply or distribution operators who achieve special performance
in one or more of the following areas:
- Continuous compliance with public health
standards in drinking water,
- Consistent and outstanding contribution
to plant maintenance,
- Development of new and/or modified equipment
or significant process modifications to provide for more
efficient and/or effective treatment,
- Special efforts in training operators,
- Special acts not directly related to water
treatment, but which demonstrate dedication to the public
beyond normal operating responsibilities, and
- Consistent and outstanding contribution
to operation and/or maintenance of distribution lines,
pump stations, and reservoirs.
Nominations for this section-level award
are due by June 1 each year and can be made by any AWWA

| The
Outstanding Service to AWWA Award honors a member of
AWWA who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Association
through leadership and active participation in AWWA programs
for at least 10 years. The award is presented as deserved,
but not more than once each year. Nominations may be made

Committee is responsible for making nominations on behalf
of the Section, and interested parties are encouraged to contact
the Nominations

| The
Public Communications Achievement Award recognizes
excellence in the field of communicating information about
water profession issues to the public. AWWA members and/or
organizations may be recognized for significant accomplishments
in communication, educating the public, promoting awareness
and understanding of water issues, establishing media relations,
implementing community involvement programs, and inspiring
others to model behavior with the public that builds trust
and credibility. No more than one award will be presented
each year, in each of the four following categories: (1) individuals
serving more than 100,000, (2) organizations serving more
than 100,000, (3) individuals serving less than 100,000, and
(4) organizations serving less than 100,000. Nominations are

| The
Safety Award, established in honor of Wendell R. LaDue,
recognizes distinguished safety programs by water utilities.
Each year, an award is presented to one utility in each of
four classes: (1) fewer than 10 employees, (2) 10-100 employees,
(3) 100-500 employees, and (4) more than 500 employees. AWWA
accepts one nomination in each class from the safety chairperson
of each section. Nominations are due to AWWA by June 1. For

| Completion of AWWA's annual
Safety Survey for Water Utilities
can lead to an Award of Excellence, Award of Merit, or Award
of Honor for utilities. The awards are presented to utilities
that achieve a low incidence of work-related injuries and
sicknesses. To be considered, utilities only need to complete
the survey form that is mailed out each spring and return
it to AWWA. For more information, contact the Accident

| The
Water Industry Hall of Fame was established in 1970
to perpetuate the memory of those living an deceased who have
made the most significant contributions to the field of public
water supply. Marsden C. Smith of VAAWWA was recognized as
a Hall of Fame member in 1978. Nominations may be made by

Kenneth J. Miller Water For People Founder's Award
is presented to volunteers in recognition of outstanding service
